Summer is a time for road trips, sunshine, camps and time away from school for most students, but it can also be a "brain drain." If students don't actively engage in learning, there is a risk of knowledge and skills loss. It's important for parents to keep children's minds active during these months so they remain sharp for re-enrollment in the fall. Here are tips to help you beat the summer brain drain! Encourage Reading Reading is a fantastic way to keep your child engaged. Whether it's a comic book or a K-5 chapter book, encouragement to read can make a difference. Try to make it fun by turning reading into a game, joining a community storytime or competition like a reading challenge or a book scavenger hunt. Hands-on Activities Another great way to keep your child's mind active is through hands-on activities. You can cook or bake together. You could also build model trains or go bird watching together. These activities are fun and help to develop analytical skills and boost creativity. Field Trips Almost every child enjoys field trips and they are a great way to keep your student's mind active during the summer. Try a trip to the local museum, the zoo or the aquarium. Even a trip to the library can be turned into an adventure (see scavenger hunt idea above). Outings like these provide a ton of learning opportunities. Check out our second graders taking a trip to the Rawlings Botanical Garden. By incorporating these tips into your summer routine, you can help your child beat the summer brain drain and return to school in the fall ready to learn and grow.
